Embarking on a year-end adventure from the vibrant cityscape of Singapore to the tranquil landscapes of Perth, we envisioned sun-soaked days, sandy beaches, and perhaps a friendly kangaroo hopping by. Little did we know, Perth had its unique rhythm that would unfold in unexpected ways.
"What did we do?"
Arriving after midnight, the immigration process was predictably slow but entirely understandable. As we hopped into a taxi headed for the CBD area and our hotel, a peculiar observation struck us - the city was eerily quiet. Streets devoid of cars and people, it triggered a humorous yet nervous thought, "Oh great! If we got kidnapped, no one would know!" - blame it on the crime TV show binge!
The hotel, part of a major chain, painted an interesting picture. The expansive and dimly lit space gave off an old mansion vibe, reminiscent of a setting where no one dared to tread. A momentary lack of concierge added to the peculiar ambiance, but thankfully, the reception had someone on standby to check us in. Hoping for a livelier scene come morning, we eagerly anticipated the day ahead. With the morning light around 4:30 AM, Perth emerged from its nocturnal stillness. The hotel, the streets, and every corner we explored had more people, adding a sense of vibrancy to the landscape. The initial tranquility was giving way to the laid-back charm that Perth is known for. Perth's Laid-Back Vibes
Perth's energy level is akin to that friend who swears by "Netflix and chill" every weekend. Quiet, laid-back, and not overly enthusiastic. It's a paradise for kids to run free in nature. Our little one, Alavi, reveled in the open parks and broad sidewalks, charging ahead with boundless energy. With fewer dogs around and designated paths prohibiting bikes and scooters, it was a perfect haven for family strolls.
Shopping and Entertainment Quirk
Imagine the scenario: It's 6 PM, and you're geared up for some retail therapy. Plot twist! Perth takes its early closing hours seriously, leaving you with a shopping curfew. It's like Cinderella's clock striking midnight, only at sunset.
While our energy levels coincidentally matched this timeline, it's worth noting for those seeking post-dinner revelry. Bars, too, wrap up early, usually by 9 or 10 PM, leaving limited options for the night owls.
The Tale of Two Stays
We opted for two different hotels (to maximize our hotel points) led us to distinct experiences.
The first, our "haunted mansion," offered an 'average at best' stay despite its five-star label. Room and pool? Acceptable. Service? Needed improvement. However, the breakfast spread managed to salvage the experience with its diverse options.
The second hotel, meeting our five-star expectations, delivered exceptional service. Luggage assistance, fussing over our kids (they even made puree for our 5-month-old forever-hungry infant), and an ever-welcoming attitude characterized our stay. Choosing this hotel for New Year's Eve proved to be a wise move! It gave us front-row seats to the fireworks extravaganza without leaving the comfort of our room. And yes, the NYE's fireworks happened at 8 PM. Perfect for our family who usually bed down around 8-8:30 PM! Sightseeing in Perth
Enough with the quirks, let's dive into the highlights. King's Park My very own favorite. A green oasis overlooking the city surpassed expectations. Mother Nature showcased her finest landscaping skills, providing a haven for nature lovers. And those views? Prepare to update your Instagram with a speed that rivals a quokka's photogenic prowess.

Elizabeth Quay
For a taste of modernity, Elizabeth Quay became our urban retreat. A waterfront precinct blending art, entertainment, and just the right urban buzz, it showcased Perth's ability to embrace liveliness. As if saying, "We can do vibrant too, mate!"
Shopping Adventures on Murray and Hay Street
Now, let's add a touch of retail therapy to the Perth experience. If you find yourself yearning for the perfect shopping fix, head straight to Murray and Hay Street. These bustling streets in the heart of Perth's CBD are a shopper's paradise. From boutique stores to renowned brands, the vibrant shopping scene offers an array of choices for those seeking the latest trends or unique finds.
Our escapade to Perth was a delightful blend of quirks, quietude, and rooftop views. Each added to the charm of this laid-back city, leaving us with memories as distinct as the cityscape itself.
