We decided to travel to Los Angeles for our family holiday, drawn to it as a must-visit city in the States. Now, after our visit, I'm left with mixed feelings. Los Angeles is a city of stark contrasts. On one hand, you have the glitz and glamour of Beverly Hills, where luxury and opulence are on full display. Just a block away, however, the scene can shift dramatically i.e. it might feel safer if you stay inside after dark. But if you're still curious about LA and you have a family with young children to travel with, here’s a guide to making the most out of a family trip to this vibrant city.

Explore World-Class Museums
Los Angeles is home to an impressive array of museums that are fun for parents and kids alike. The California Science Center not only offers interactive exhibits but also houses the Space Shuttle Endeavour, a must-see for any budding astronaut. Meanwhile, the Natural History Museum lets you travel back in time with its dinosaur hall and extensive collection of natural wonders.
Enjoy the Great Outdoors
For families looking to enjoy LA’s famous sunshine, spending a day at the Griffith Park is a perfect choice. Home to the Los Angeles Zoo, hiking trails, and the Griffith Observatory, this park offers stunning views of the city and educational programs at the observatory that are engaging for all ages. For beach days, Santa Monica Beach and Venice Beach provide both sandy relaxation and bustling boardwalks full of performers and quirky shops.
Discover the Magic of Hollywood
No visit to Los Angeles is complete without a touch of Hollywood magic. Take a tour of the Warner Bros. Studio to see where some of your favorite movies and TV shows are made. For families with older children, the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park provides thrilling rides and a real working movie studio experience. Don’t forget to walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame to find the stars of your favorite celebrities!
Dive into the Food Scene
Los Angeles is a melting pot of cultures, which is reflected in its food offerings. Visit Grand Central Market, where you can sample food from all around the world in just one location. Whether it’s tasting Mexican tacos, Italian pasta, or Japanese ramen, it’s a place where even the pickiest eaters will find something to delight in. Additionally, many food trucks around the city offer unique, kid-friendly eats that can’t be found anywhere else.
Catch a Game or Show
Depending on the season, catching a live sports event can be a thrilling experience for the whole family. From watching the Dodgers play baseball to catching a Lakers or Clippers basketball game, the energy is palpable. For families enjoying the arts, check out performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall or outdoor shows at The Hollywood Bowl, which often hosts family-friendly concerts and movie nights with live orchestras.
Tips for Family Travel in LA
