10 Must-See Places in Perth (and a place where locals don't know!)

Updated: Feb 9, 2024

Perth, the sun-soaked jewel on Australia's west coast, beckons travelers with a captivating blend of natural beauty, urban vibrancy, and rich history. Explore the must-see attractions in this charming city, where every corner tells a story and each landmark promises a visual feast.

1. Elizabeth Quay - A Waterfront Wonderland

Nestled on the banks of the Swan River, Elizabeth Quay stands as Perth's contemporary masterpiece. The waterfront precinct seamlessly blends art, entertainment, and urban sophistication. Take a stroll along the promenade, revel in the mesmerizing public art installations, and perhaps indulge in a scenic boat cruise. The panoramic views of the city skyline and the iconic Bell Tower from Elizabeth Quay create postcard-worthy moments.

2. King's Park - Nature's Crown Jewel

Escape the urban bustle and ascend to the tranquil haven of King's Park. This expansive green oasis not only offers breathtaking views of the city but also showcases Western Australia's unique flora. The park is supposedly one of the largest parks in the world at 400.6 hectares. It was first opened for public use in 1872, and called "The Perth Park". The name was changed to King's Park to mark the accession of King Edward VII to the throne in 1901. Wander through the treetop walkways, visit the State War Memorial, and don't miss the serene Botanic Gardens. King's Park is a perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational spaces (there are plenty of barbeque pit stops that are free to use, should you feel desire!), making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and families alike. My suggestions: apply loads of sunscreen and have a picnic!

3. The Bell Tower - Echoes of History

Standing proudly on the banks of the Swan River, The Bell Tower is not just an architectural marvel but a repository of history. Home to the historic bells of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields, this iconic structure invites visitors to delve into the art of bell ringing. Capture breathtaking views of the city and river from the observation deck, and perhaps, try your hand at ringing the ancient bells.

4. St George's Cathedral - A Spiritual Sojourn

A testament to Perth's architectural heritage, St George's Cathedral is a sacred space that transcends time. Marvel at the stunning Gothic Revival architecture, intricate stained glass windows, and the serene atmosphere. Whether you seek spiritual solace or admire architectural grandeur, a visit to St George's Cathedral is a journey through both time and faith.

5. Langley Park - Recreational Bliss: A green expanse nestled along the foreshore of the Swan River, Langley Park is the epitome of recreational bliss. Whether you're into sports, picnics, or simply unwinding by the riverside, this park caters to all. Events and festivals often grace the park, adding a touch of cultural vibrancy to its natural charm.

My son, Alavi, and his dad pretty much used this space to run around!

6. Northbridge - Culinary Odyssey for Asian Food Lovers

Dive into the multicultural tapestry of Northbridge (or the Chinatown of Perth). Beyond its vibrant arts scene, Northbridge is a haven for food enthusiasts, especially those craving Asian flavors. Explore the diverse array of eateries, from bustling markets to hidden gems serving delectable dishes from across the continent.

7. London Court - Old-World Charm in the Heart of Perth

Step back in time as you stroll through London Court, a charming pedestrian mall reminiscent of Elizabethan architecture. Lined with boutique shops and cafes, this historic precinct is a delightful fusion of old-world charm and modern allure. Explore its unique clock, adorned with moving knights, marking each quarter-hour with a touch of whimsy.

8. Swan River - A Tranquil Waterway

The Swan River, meandering gracefully through the heart of Perth, is more than just a waterway; it's an emblem of the city's soul. Enjoy a scenic river cruise, indulge in waterside picnics, or simply bask in the tranquil ambiance of this iconic watercourse. But just be careful if you have children running around or swimming. When we were there, 2 children were found drowned. And earlier in 2013, there was a shark attack!

9. The Blue Boathouse - Iconic Riverside Photography: An Instagram sensation, the Blue Boathouse stands as a picturesque landmark along the Swan River. Its vibrant blue hues against the backdrop of the cityscape make it a favorite among photographers and visitors alike. Especially for wedding photos! Capture the essence of Perth's riverside beauty with this iconic boathouse as your backdrop.

10. Old Courthouse Law Museum - Legal History Unveiled: Immerse yourself in Perth's legal history at the Old Courthouse Law Museum. Housed in a historic building dating back to 1836, this museum provides a fascinating journey through the city's judicial past. Explore legal artifacts, witness a courtroom in its original state, and gain insights into the evolution of Western Australia's legal system. BONUS (even the locals don't know!) Kangaroo Reserve at Heirisson Island - Up Close with Wildlife

For a unique Australian encounter, head to Heirisson Island's Kangaroo Reserve. Funny story: we woke up at 5:30 AM and decided to walk from our hotel. We looked at the map, and it seemed close (only about 2 kilometers!). But when we got to Heirisson Island, there was a big construction site instead of kangaroos. We asked locals, but no one knew where the kangaroos were! One person even said we should go to the zoo!

We didn't give up. We kept walking and found out the sanctuary was behind the construction site. It had a gate, and behind it was a little kangaroo. We weren't sure if we could go in until we met a boy and his dad who worked there. They let us in, and that's how we met Missy, a small kangaroo. There were only five kangaroos in this place.

This special spot in the city lets you get close to Western Grey kangaroos. Walk around, say hi to the kangaroos, and take pictures with the Swan River in the background. It's a fun and wild adventure right in the heart of Perth!

Perth's allure lies not just in its landscapes but in the stories etched within its landmarks. From the serene beauty of King's Park to the vibrant culinary scene in Northbridge, each attraction adds a layer to the city's captivating narrative.
